EXPERIENCE the past when you follow the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail. Pick up the trail at the visitor information centre, which has an adjoining orientation centre that gives a free guided tour. An interactive virtual tour of the city’s One Square Mile takes you around a historic mining precinct of magnificent civic buildings of the era that include the Stock Exchange Arcade, World Theatre and the Charters Towers Post Office.
The tour follows through the grand Stock Exchange Arcade, where you can see an audio presentation re-enactment of the “Calling of the Card” (trading of gold stocks and shares) as it was more than 100 years ago.
Situated on the outskirts of town is the Venus Gold Battery. It is the largest surviving battery relic in Australia. Interactive audio-visuals tell the story of how the mill operated and how the battery’s equipment was used to extract gold from ore. You can see this during a fully guided tour which finishes with the “Ghosts of Gold”, projected onto a spectacular water screen.
