Top fishing at Clairview Beach

CLAIRVIEW is a small coastal community 205km north of Rockhampton and 130km south of Mackay.

Although it has a permanent population of less than 50, this number is always boosted by visitors to the area, for Clairview Beach is a popular destination for recreational anglers and holidaymakers.

The beaches and estuaries around Clairview are well known for the great fishing all year round. You can catch whiting, bream, flathead and salmon, and might sometimes come across shovel-nosed sharks, stingrays, sole, grunter and catfish. Crabbing is usually good from September to April.

The islands accessible from Clairview are abundant with many varieties of deep water and reef fish.

Other marine life to be seen include dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles. Some people like to do a bit of birdwatching in the area, or do some shell hunting on the islands.

And of course walks along the beach are a favourite pastime among guests.

For about 30 years, people have been making their holiday base at Clairview Beach Holiday Park (although it hasn’t always gone by that name).

For those bringing their own style of accommodation, there are drive-through sites and campsites, and others who prefer to travel a little more lightly can book in to a cabin at the park.

Quite a few people meet here for their winter holiday every year and make an art form of their holiday – playing board games and cards, fishing and having barbecues.

A store sells fresh fruit and vegetables, smallgoods, frozen meat, icecream, cold drinks, groceries, ice and bait. There is also a postal service, EFTPOS facilities can be used there and both unleaded fuel and diesel are available. A small bar facility also operates. It all combines to make it a hassle free holiday.

Guests often see possums at night and sometimes the little animals will feed quite close to people.

The “long house” at the park is open to all guests, who gather there to cook and eat their meals – and sometimes just for a natter. Cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided.

If you’re not in the mood to cook, take advantage of dinner which is available any night of the week. A set meal is cooked (it’s different every night) and you need to book by 5.30pm.
