Your own mountain of gold

ONCE, Mount Morgan was known as a mountain of gold. You can still strike it rich in Mount Morgan today - try your luck with the Golden Casket at the Mount Morgan Newsagency!

Schae and Kerrilyn Page were planning a round-Australia trip with their children when they returned to the town where they’d grown up. They put their travelling plans on hold to buy a business in their home town and now put all their energies into that instead.

These third generation Mount Morganites make you feel very welcome and offer a great service. The newsagency is open from 6.00am seven days a week and closes 5.00pm on weekdays, noon on Saturdays and 11.00am on Sundays.

Browse around their large range of magazines. You can also book a trip on TravelTrain or a Greyhound coach or use the Rock Building Society agency.

Outreach from Mount Morgan has gone a long way

Here are two snippets that show just how far reaching one town’s influence can be.

THE WALTER and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, situated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, began in 1915 as a direct result of the gold mined at Mount Morgan. Walter Hall accumulated millions of dollars as a major shareholder of the Mount Morgan Gold Mine. When he died in 1911, his wife Eliza began the process of establishing a trust, part of which went to establishing one of the world’s leading research centres.

THE GIANT multi-national oil company, British Petroleum, had its start in 1901 when William Knox D’Arcy, who had made his fortune from the Mount Morgan gold-mining company and was the London chairman of the company board at the time, was granted the exclusive rights to search for natural gas and petroleum throughout most of Persia.

In the next few years of exploration, D’Arcy’s funds became stretched and he sought new sources of capital. A new syndicate brought the management of the venture under the wing of Burmah Oil and to eventual success.
