| Just two hours from Brisbane by car is Gympie, the golden town of Queensland's past. While gold is an integral part of its history, it is also part of the provincial city's present. Visitors can see the gracious historic buildings built with gold profits during the boom times, and there's even a chance to try a little gold fossicking for themselves.
People can also visit the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, the WoodWorks Timber and Forestry Museum, and enjoy a picnic at Lake Alford or Nelson's Reserve. And jump aboard the Valley Rattler for a wonderful heritage railway experience.
Gympie is situated on the Mary River 160km north of Brisbane, has a population of 15,500 people in the city and nearly 30,000 people within the Cooloola Shire.
It is also a good setting off spot for seeing the natural beauties of Mary Valley, Kilkivan Shire and the picturesque Cooloola Coast. |
