TURNING a hobby into a full time business is a way of enjoying a great lifestyle in your later years.
So say John and Cecile Steenbergen, who have had a rocky road to retirement success - literally. At Cooloola Rocks and Minerals on the Bruce Highway just south of Gympie, they share the results of a lifetime of collecting rocks and minerals - along with a few novelties like their Magic Box and the Black Room. Specimens of rocks, minerals and fossils are for sale in the main room, while snacks and devonshire teas can be taken in the relaxed atmosphere of the cafe, verandah or gardens.
As well as Australian stock, beautiful overseas specimens make the international section a great drawcard.
A great time to visit is the first weekend of August for the Kybong Rock and Mineral Fest. Tailgaters from all states of Australia set up stalls and camp out for the weekend. They exchange tips, swap special pieces and tell yarns around campfires.
The shop is open seven days from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Group and tour bookings are welcome.
