IT’S THE kind of place where, if you’re a grey nomad with no fixed schedule, an overnight stay can easily stretch into a couple of weeks.
Boonooroo is wonderfully laidback - where you can enjoy a slower pace of life while still being within cooee of city facilities. (Maryborough is just 24km away.) Some days, you might like to putter around in a tinny catching fish or doing some crabbing.
Launch your boat and fish up the Big Tuan and Little Tuan Creeks, or cast a line somewhere out in the Great Sandy Strait.
On a fine day with the right conditions, you can even give your tinny a workout and go over to Fraser Island! And if you’re a twitcher, you’ll need to have the binoculars at hand because this area is a birdwatcher’s paradise with many migratory birds.
Right on the waterfront where the channels of Little Tuan and Big Tuan meet is the Boonooroo Caravan Park. And if it’s not enough that there’s water at your doorstep, State Forests are all around. The caravan park is also just 400m from the Poona National Park.
Most people who come bring their own vans or tents, but there are a couple of on-site vans available for couples who don’t have their own accommodation.
Lots of people on their winter migration from the cooler southern areas stay three or four months at a stretch.
The park has a pool as well as a store that has bait and tackle, ice and fuel.
Barbecues are scattered throughout the park, or you can have your own campfire in one of the designated areas. Few things in life are more enjoyable than the simple pleasure of ending the day with a meal cooked and eaten in the great outdoors, whether it’s steak and sausages or freshly caught fish.
T
here’s a golf club in the area as well, and the bowls club is in walking distance. The Boonooroo Sandy Straits Bowls Club, on Eckert Road, opens at noon seven days a week.
Bowling days are Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and visitors are always welcome. The synthetic green means it’s always in good condition. Meals are available on Friday and Saturday nights. Ice cold beer is on tap, and there are poker machines so you can try your luck.
Even if it’s not a bowling day, relax over a drink any time after midday.
