ESCAPE from the rat race and immerse yourself in a relaxing little nature haven when you spend some time at Poona.

This area is perfect for pottering about in a boat. Poona’s coastline faces straight out onto the Sandy Strait, so you can mooch around in a tinny either fishing or just doing some nature appreciation. You’re likely to see dugongs and dolphins all through the Sandy Strait, and if you’re trailing a fishing line you might go home with whiting, flathead, bream, mangrove jack or a nice cod. The fishing is excellent! If you do go out boating, Fraser Island is a great destination and not far away.

Birdlife is also prolific in the region. Lots of birds go down to the mudflats at low tide - you might see eastern curlews, timbrels and plovers among them. A birdwatching list is available from the Poona Palms Caravan Park, so when you’re booking into your accommodation, make sure you ask for one. The park has air-conditioned self-contained units as well as spacious sites for caravanners and campers.

At different times of the year, this region has lots of wildflowers as well, so it’s a really pretty spot.

Poona Palms offers a relaxed atmosphere where you’ll feel instantly at home. On Saturday nights, the owner managers even throw on a free sausage sizzle. Just bring your plate and cutlery and follow the smell of barbecuing sausages at the barbecue area, right next to the pool.

It starts at 6.30pm and is a great chance for park guests to get together and socialise. On the other nights, you can use the camp kitchen to cook up a storm.
