The city of Rockhampton, situated where the Bruce Highway crosses the Tropic of Capricorn, is a major centre that is rich in primary industry, history and natural beauty. Rockhampton is considered the cultural and educational capital of central Queensland with its beautifully appointed civic theatre, botanic gardens and university.
It is an unusual city, with wide open spaces, clean air and clear blue skies. Grand old buildings give the streetscape a taste of Victorian grace.
The major industry in the region is coal, and Rockhampton is well known for its beef industry, ranging from the grazing of cattle to the processing of beef to a huge export industry. The city straddles the Fitzroy River and looks towards the Berserker Ranges.
Visitors are well looked after at both the Capricorn Spire Tourist Information Centre on Gladstone Road and at the Riverside Tourist and Business Information Centre in Quay Street. |
