Message to Grey Nomads
ATTENTION all grey nomads: If you are visiting central western Queensland in the near future, the Barcaldine Regional Council would like to invite you to share some of your skills with the community as part of their Grey Nomad Volunteer Program.
The program aims to unlock the community capacity of communities within the Barcaldine Regional Council region and contribute to accomplishing local community group projects through a number of structured activities, leading to a strong vibrant sustainable community.
The key activity is to successfully create mutually beneficial relationships with Grey Nomad Volunteers visiting the region during the tourist season, where their expertise and skills will contribute to the completion of local community projects. It is anticipated this process can then be applied to other regional communities.
Other program activities aim to increase the skills, confidence and leadership of the region’s communities.
Projects are diverse. Previously Grey Nomad Volunteers have helped out at the primary school, churches, senior citizens club, hospital, library, kindergarten, golf club, cemetery, museum, Central West Aboriginal Corporation, Arts Council, Girl Guides and assisted with other community events.
A valuable output from this program will be a detailed ‘road map’ outlining the route the Barcaldine Regional Council took in developing the program and which other communities can learn from and adopt.
