The Diamantina Shire is vast - and out here, all roads lead to adventure! If you're an Australian, you'll have heard of one of the shire's towns, Birdsville, even though it's only a small place.
Birdsville's great claim to fame in the past has been the Birdsville Races, and theyr'e still an important event on the town calendar. But there's much more to this area than three weeks of racing in September. Come and discover it for yourself.
Visit Big Red, 41km west of Birdsville. It's believed to be one of the largest sandhills in the Southern Hemisphere. Also near Bedourie, visit Diamantina National Park, home of the bilby.
The administrative centre of the shire is Bedourie, which also has a great spa where you can soak your worries away. Another town in the shire is Betoota. Its population, by the way, is the grand total of one. |
