There’s plenty of treasure to be found in Blackall. Follow the Art Treasure Track and discover original artworks located at local businesses, as well as public art scattered throughout the town. The Art Treasure Track is an offshoot of Blackall’s Heartland Festival which always has events for everyone to enjoy, and this year is no exception. There will be workshops on cartooning and hebel (aerated cement) sculpting, a photographic exhibition, an art show, a Food and Music Fiesta with Friends of Pedro and a Murder Mystery Night.
See the Masonic Lodge, the Major Mitchell Clock, the fossilised tree stump, the Australian Labor Federation Memorial, the Black Stump mural and the pioneer bore.
Discover the magic of artesian water at the Blackall Aquatic Centre - take a dip in a soothing artesian spa or swim in the 50m swimming pool, both of which are heated during the winter months. The pool has a disabled lift and walk-in access. It’s open daily from 10.00am to 6.00pm between May and September. Summer hours are 6.00am to 10.00am and 2.30pm to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 6.00pm on weekends. For a water feature of another kind, follow the Blackall Birdwatchers Trail. The trail starts at the picnic area on the Blackall-Isisford Road and follows the banks of the Barcoo for about 2.5km. Pick up a map and leaflet from the information centre.
Further afield, visit Idalia National Park, about 112km from Blackall, in the Gowan Range. The park has majestic red river gums, sandy riverbeds, spring-fed waterholes, stands of acacias, open woodlands and rocky escarpments.
