WHETHER you think it’s a science or an art, knowing where the fish are biting is something that every fishing enthusiast wants to know.
There’s no better way of finding out than going fishing with a local. Half-day and all-day fishing trips can be organised through BA Fishing Tours at the Burketown Caravan Park.
Explore the mangrove-lined Albert River, meandering 35km to the Gulf of Carpentaria. You’re likely to see birdlife including jabiru, brolgas, stilts, sea eagles and kites, and you might glimpse a saltwater crocodile too.
Fishing tours include full-day tours with lunch and bait provided (with tackle on request) and are for a minimum of three people.
The half-day fishing tour has been very popular with people who are passing through Burketown. During the main season they might catch salmon, jew, grunter, cod or queen. Barramundi are generally caught earlier or later in the year when the weather is warmer. Charters are also available then.
The Burketown Caravan Park offers air-conditioned cabins (some with en suites) and sites, and has a kiosk where you can buy bait, tackle and ice. You can also buy takeaway food or even some local barra if you’re not intending to catch your own!
