Unique waterway tour at Cobbold Gorge

A BOAT trip through a unique waterway and views from a tall escarpment are amazing highlights of a visit to Cobbold Gorge.
Situated 90 minutes’ drive from Georgetown and less than an hour’s drive southwest of Forsayth, Cobbold Gorge is the ultimate outback adventure. The attraction is accessible only through guided tours from Cobbold Gorge, which is owned and operated by Simon and Gaye Terry. A boat cruise past majestic sandstone cliffs will leave you spellbound. The cliffs rise up to 30m along the first 500m of this 6km-long gorge, which is spring fed from the sandstone escarpments.

There are two tours available. The three-hour Gorge Tour includes a visit to the grave of pioneer John Corbett and an overview of the geological history that has created the rugged sandstone formations. Walk to the top of the escarpment for freshwater crocodile viewing. The boat cruise gives you the chance to experience the eerie silence and spectacular beauty of Cobbold Gorge. Hats, covered walking shoes and a small bottle of water are required.

The Gorge Tour departs at 10.00am from April 1 to October 31. During Easter and in the coolest months from June to August, a 1.30pm tour is also offered.

The second tour available from Cobbold Gorge is the Robin Hood Cattle Station and Fishing Experience. Here, you can gain an insight into the cattle grazing industry as you see first hand some of the implications of management today and into the future on the 1237-square-kilometre property.
***Your guide will bring to life some of these challenges and you will also have time to relax over smoko and test your fishing skills against the mighty barramundi fighting fish at one of the large water storages. Some tackle is provided, or many guests bring their own. The four-hour tour departs at 8.00am and 1.30pm daily (minimum numbers apply).

For a different perspective of this country, a helicopter is available at various times over the season to do scenic flights over the sandstone escarpment. This gives a fantastic view of the large expanse of sandstone along with the river systems.

Once you’ve seen the attractions close by, you might like to do a self-drive excursion to Agate Creek Gemfields (40km), Gilberton Loop and The Quartz Blow.

Cobbold Gorge offers an open bush setting, giving a feel of warm hospitality. A range of accommodation is on offer from comfortable air-conditioned en suite rooms to camping with fireplaces, or powered sites with en suites.

Other activities include agate fossicking at Agate Creek, aqua golf and canoeing in the dam at the camping area, swimming pool, volleyball and astronomy. All guests can take advantage of the amenities and facilities of Cobbold Village. Take a refreshing swim in the pool, located just off MacDonald’s deck. Stock up on quality souvenirs, film, disposable cameras, ice and a good variety of grocery items at Corbett’s Store. Fossicking permits are available for those wanting to try their luck at fossicking at Agate Creek Gemfields.

MacDonald’s Deck offers a fully licensed bar and restaurant providing quality home cooked meals. Light snacks and lunches are available from the coffee bar.

Information regarding activities in the local area and forward bookings at attractions within Gulf Savannah region is available at reception. A public phone/internet connection is available.
