FEEL like you’re a million miles from civilisation without leaving the bitumen when you visit Gregory Downs.
People with their own vans often camp down by the river to soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Others may prefer to plug their vans in to the power at Billy Hangers General Store or book an air-conditioned room.
Then enjoy the scenery. Sit quietly waiting for the wildlife to come to the picturesque Gregory River to drink ... or enjoy the chance to paddle a canoe ... or nod off over a fishing line in the hope of pulling in a barramundi. You might even want to throw in a yabby pot. Take a walk along the river (pictured above), where you can watch the birds and wallabies. Those who enjoy canoeing will find that there are mild rapids as well as tranquil waterholes to traverse.
The general store sells takeaway food, fishing tackle, lures, rods, ice, meat, bread and vegetables.
When it’s time to move on, venture off the bitumen to beautiful Lawn Hill (right). It has an unexpectedly tropical beauty, abundant water, aboriginal art sites, 20km of walking tracks and a deep, glorious gorge.
