Julia Creek is the administrative centre of the McKinlay Shire, which spreads over many miles in Queensland's outback.

Some of the attractions of the shire are far flung, like Combo Waterhole near Kynuna and the Walkabout Hotel at McKinlay (the pub starred in the Australian film, "Crocodile Dundee").
