A Karumba sunset.
 |
Karumba. The road stops here. The Matilda Highway, that is. And if you've followed the "Matilda" from its southern start at Cunnamulla, it has been a long time since you've seen the sea - and here it is, the superb Gulf of Carpentaria.
Situated 69km from Normanton, Karumba is the only port town in the region. Just 8km down the road is Karumba Point. Because of the nature of the coastline, Karumba Point is the only stretch of beach in the central Savannah that can be accessed by bitumen road. That only serves to make it more special to those who visit. Anyone who has been on the beach at sunset will assure you it's a memorable experience.
Well seasoned travellers who have been just about everywhere in Australia will tell you that there's nowhere with quite the same atmosphere as Karumba in winter. It's friendly, laidback, and a little bit rough and ready.
