Mitchell, on the Warrego Highway, is the south-eastern gateway to Matilda Country, and is really the first official taste of "outback Queensland" for people travelling west from Queensland's capital, Brisbane.

The town itself has about 1300 residents, and is situated in a grain growing and cattle breeding district. One of the biggest attractions for the town is the artesian spa. Don't go through town without stopping for a relaxing spa in the mineral-rich water. Also, pay a visit to the Old Kenniff Courthouse.

Mungallala will be your next stop when heading west. Stop for a meal and look around. This is the middle of sheep and cattle country and the region is well known for its cypress pine mill.

Morven, also on the Warrego Highway, has a population of 250. People who are interested in history should make a point of going to the museum where miniature buildings are on display. While in the area, make a detour to see the native ooline trees.
