THE MAGNIFICENT Mount Moffatt section of the Carnarvon National Park is situated about 200km north of Mitchell and is accessed by the Forest Vale Road.
Originally operated as a large cattle run, Mount Moffatt is now maintained as a wilderness park. It is open to the public and camping is allowed in selected areas and view the great wonders nature has provided.
It also has a connection with Booringa Shire’s more shaded past in that the notorious Kenniff brothers, the last of Queensland bushrangers, roamed this area and it was here, in an area known as Lethbridge’s Pocket, that it was alleged they killed and incinerated station manager A.C. Dalkhe and Constable G. Doyle when they attempted to apprehend them for horse stealing in 1902.
It is recommended that visitors use a high clearance or four-wheel drive vehicle for the journey, as the top sections of the road can be rough. As it is a wilderness park, no fuel is available so enough must be carried for the return journey and the 90km of park roads that can be traversed.

Some water and toilet facilities are available at the campsites, although fresh drinking water, provisions and camping equipment must be taken and it is suggested that a gas cooking appliance be used as fire bans apply in certain seasons.
Enroute, you are treated to some spectacular rural panoramas and unique viewing features.
If your visit to Mt Moffatt whets your appetite about the infamous Kenniff Brothers, make sure you visit the Kenniff Courthouse while you are in Mitchell.
It was within this building that the bushrangers were committed to stand trial for murder, and a display inside now tells the story of Patrick and James Kenniff. It’s open from 9.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
