Tours by day and campfire hospitality at night

DURING the day, take a tour to discover some of the attractions of the region. At night, relax around a campfire after a home-cooked meal that you haven’t had to cook yourself.

This is the sort of pleasure that’s in store when you stay at Bedrock Village.

Hosts Joe and Jo Lockyer have built their caravan park with their customers’ comfort in mind. All powered sites are drive through, spacious and screened by native trees. A seniors discount applies on powered sites.

The campground is a green, shady oasis and all on-site accommodation from single rooms to family sized self-contained units are air conditioned and linen is supplied. Recent additions include 15 deluxe en suite units, four of which have two bedrooms and one which is for the disabled.

There are two free gas barbecue areas and a camp kitchen, laundry and TV room. A 2007 addition to the park is a new amenities block including facilities for the disabled.

Most nights, inexpensive meals are served at the park, followed by a campfire singalong, an activity night or an entertaining talk about such creatures as crocodiles and snakes.

Added facilities include an 11m pool, free nine-hole mini-golf course, internet access, a new recreation room, mechanical and welding repairs and a wide range of tyres which can be fitted on site. There is a beautiful springfed creek just 300m from the property, where you may see a freshwater crocodile, or you can just stroll at your leisure and appreciate the beauty of the landscape. Toby, Joe and Jo’s 12-year-old son (pictured below), takes walking tours to Elizabeth Creek. He has been running tours for seven years and has a wealth of knowledge on the flora and fauna around the creek. These tours are free!

Full-day tours are run every day from Easter to the end of September to the Undara Lava Tubes, by a qualified Savannah Guide.

On Thursdays, join the half-day Savannahlander train ride to Einasleigh and the Copperfield Gorge then return by road.

Further afield is Cobbold Gorge. If you have a motorhome, rental car or simply prefer to leave your car and van hooked up and let someone else do the driving, the park offers a transfer to the gorge every Wednesday from May to the end of September and on Sundays in June, July and August. The transfer is a tour in itself, as it takes in a visit to the TerrEstrial Centre at Georgetown, smoko stop and a talk about interesting landmarks along the way.
