THERE is no better way to experience the gemfields than on tour, say Peter and Pam Blackburn from Mt Surprise Gems.
They offer a tour to their own claim. This means no wasted time or hassle getting licences, accessing tools and finding the fossicking field. No fossicking licence is needed because it’s on their claim, and anything you find is yours to keep. Fossicking equipment is provided - along with the know-how! The tour leaves at eight o’clock each morning (April to October) and smoko is provided during the trip.
Back at the store, try your luck with their Peg-a-Claim. Spend a couple of hours on your ‘claim’ ... who knows what you might find? If you prefer, you can still buy a bucket of wash to sieve.
G
em faceting is also an attraction at Mt Surprise Gems. Check out some of the master designs available for purchase or have your own gem material cut in a special design. Or have a go - book your two-hour introductory course.
On display at the store are fine examples of precious and semi-precious gems. Gems, jewellery and gift lines made on site are available for purchase. The licensed cafe is superb. Relax and enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner or just a real coffee. Have a game of giant garden draughts and tic-tac-toe.
