MOUNT Surprise is surprising in many ways. For a start, it has an unexpectedly large number of services for such a little place. And what makes it popular with visitors is the surprising number of attractions in the region surrounding the township. You’ll discover a wealth of history, gems, natural beauty and unusual landscape.
Taking out top honours in the unusual stakes is the Undara Lava Tubes phenomenon, situated southeast of Mount Surprise. Dating back from a volcanic eruption 190,000 years ago, it is not only the longest lava flow from a single volcano in the world but also provides a home for rare creatures and remnant rainforest flora.
For a hands-on attraction, try your luck at O’Brien’s Creek Gemfields. Something quite different is Chillagoe, accessible as a day trip. The roads are unsealed roads (marked as one of the Savannah Way alternate routes) and your day’s adventure can take in marble mining, aboriginal caves and scenic areas. A fairly high clearance vehicle is advisable. Check the condition of the roads before you set out.
In Mount Surprise itself, see relics of an old Cobb and Co coach station, military airstrips from the second world war and visit the railway station display. Wander through town and read the heritage signs.
People travelling with their own accommodation will appreciate the dump point in town (not far from the Medical Centre).
Right in town on the western side is a wash-down bay which is available for all vehicles to use. It’s part of an environmental plan to stop the spread of weeds and is free.
Drop into the Mount Surprise Hotel for a drink and a counter meal when you need a break. Accommodation is also available there.
