MMORE than 190,000 years ago, the volcano Undara erupted, leaving 23 cubic kilometres of lava to flow like boiling treacle into various riverbeds across the countryside.
The exterior lava quickly cooled and crusted, while the interior lava drained beneath to leave long, dark, hollow tubes. Ancient roof collapses have since created the fertile pockets in which rainforest plant, insect and animal species thrive ... and which visitors can now explore. This is the largest known flow of lava from a single volcano and, at a length of over 160km, it is recognised as one of the longest and best preserved lava tube systems in the world.
Undara Experience offers you the chance to explore these fascinating geological wonders. Located in the Undara Volcanic National Park and a short distance from Undara Experience, the lava tubes can only be seen through tours that are conducted by award-winning Savannah Guides. These knowledgeable guides will take you through the lava tubes, explaining how they were formed and the unique flora and fauna that now make the tubes their home.
Make your visit even more memorable by staying overnight at Undara Experience. The resort boasts accommodation to suit every style and budget, from restored turn-of-the-century railway carriages, unique Swags Tent village, budget-style Stockman’s Quarters, or camping sites suitable for tents or caravans and motor homes.
Enjoy an Aussie Bush Breakfast with billy tea over the campfire, explore the area further by taking a self-guided bushwalk, enjoy the spectacular sunset atop the Newcastle Range on the famous Wildlife at Sunset tour or relax to the sounds of the bush at the licensed bar and bistro. It’s all part of the Undara Experience.
By the way, in summer the Wildlife at Sunset tour includes the chance to see tiny insect-eating microbats flying out from inside the lava tubes, with brown tree snakes hanging from trees at the entrance in the hope of having bats for dinner.
