The Gulflander at Normanton Railway Station.
 |
Established in 1870, Normanton is the unofficial capital of the Gulf Savannah. It is the second oldest town in the Gulf and was originally the port for the boom goldrush town of Croydon.
Here, the Carpentaria Shire Council has its headquarters. The historic shire chambers is one example of the interesting architecture that can be found in the Gulf. There are also a number of hotels steeped in history. See the Burns Philp building where the entire Burns Philp empire began and visit the old Penitentiary. The town's Westpac Bank, which is over a century old, has been restored and repainted in heritage colours.
Normanton is situated on the Norman River and is a great spot for barramundi fishing in season. This area is also home to crocodiles, so visitors are warned to take care near the water. If you want to go croc spotting, it's best to go with a local.
