IF SOMEONE were to ask you which town in Australia was situated furthest from the sea, where would you say? Somewhere in the south of the Northern Territory like Alice Springs?

Well, it’s actually in western Queensland and the little township with that particular claim to fame is Eromanga. Call in to the vibrant township, take a few photos of yourself around town and prove to others that you have made it to the little Aussie town that’s most remote from the ocean.

Eromanga’s other claim to fame is for producing around 1.5 million barrels of oil each year. Be sure to take your photo alongside a real working oil donkey. If you’re following the Cobb & Co trail, call in to Eromanga and in particular to the Royal Hotel which was one of the original buildings along this trail. The hotel, which is built of mud bricks, opened its doors in 1885 and became the social centre of town. In its early years, the Royal even had a permanent pianist. They have meals as well as air-conditioned accommodation. Even if you’re not planning to stay the night, make sure you call in for a drink so you can toast the longevity of this little outback pub.
