A moment, frozen in time
The Dinosaur National Monument, commonly known as Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways, marks the exact location where dinosaurs were hunted. A giant carnosaur tracked two herds of dinosaurs to a lake and charged in an attempt to make a meal out of one. They left footprints in the mud by the lake, subsequently covered over by silt and preserved for 95 million years.
The fragile footprints were discovered in 1962, uncovered by chance. Now this reminder of times past is on display year round for everyone to see, housed in a $2.5 million rammed earth building, situated on Lark Quarry Conservation Park. Today’s stark red earth and spinifex-studded landscape is in dramatic contrast to the landscape when the dinosaurs lived in a moist and green environment.
Access to the Trackways is by guided tour only. Specially trained on-site guides provide tours at 10.00am, midday and 2.00pm daily, every day of the year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Lark Quarry Conservation Park is 110km southwest of Winton. Consider making a round trip so you can also discover the opal mining settlement of Opalton, 50km from Lark Quarry. Go fossicking to discover more relics of the Cretaceous period - opals!
At the turn of the 20th century, Opalton was a thriving mining town of 600 people. Known as Queensland’s capital of boulder opal, Opalton now has a much smaller population but there are still eccentric characters to meet! Visitors are welcome and can meet the locals, go on a mine tour or fossick for opals. You can hire gear when you get there and try a little fossicking in the designated fossicking area. (Don’t forget to buy a fossicking licence before you leave Winton.)
Although dinosaurs and opals are among the oldest attractions of the region, the Winton Shire has many other claims to fame. This was the region that inspired Banjo Paterson to write Australia’s national song, Waltzing Matilda, and was also the birthplace of QANTAS, which grew into Australia’s national airline.
